Lessons from Haiti

– Smile, you’re alive
– Make do with what you have
– Share generously
– Be grateful for your neighbor

I was honored to serve with a team of Haitian community homeopaths in the aftermath of hurricane Matthew. In early October Matthew de-roofed & leveled structures & trees in an enormous area with 150+ mph winds and up to 40″ rain in southwest Haiti.

You may have seen the news, the many photos, and heard that the UN is at work, but on the ground, far too little aid has reached those in dire need, yet the people have such love for their neighbors & so much resilience in the face of catastrophic losses.

Those that have little feed those with less. We saw tidy clean interiors of homes with no possessions or roofs, amidst scenes that were other-worldly. The HWBteam is treating emotional & physical trauma as well as many cases of diarrhea and infectious illness from lack of clean water and shelter.

Over 200 patients have been seen each clinic day since day 14 after the hurricane made landfall. In every location throngs of people line up in the early morning, well before the clinic begins. There has been an outstanding collaborative effort between local Haitian doctors, homeopathic communitaire and Homeopaths Without Bordersstaff & volunteers to deliver multidisciplinary care to those in need.

These disaster-related clinics are ongoing and will continue on a daily basis through mid-November. However, the real work of HWB is to continue to train Haitian medical personnel and birth attendants to respond in areas in which they live and work. This requires funding due to the economic condition of Haiti.

If you are unable to attend the concert but would still like to donate to train a Haitian medical person or birth attendant for the upcoming class beginning in Jan 2017 please click the button below. And thank you – every little bit helps!

Tom Porter

Tom has played with some of the world’s most renowned jazz musicians, including sax player Tim Garland (a frequent collaborator with Chick Corea) and former Ark Blakey ‘Jazz Messenger’ Jean Toussaint.

You may know Tom Porter as the former host of “Maine Things Considered” on Maine public radio (he’s the one with the British accent!), but you may not have known he is also an accomplished pianist, with more than 30 years experience performing jazz piano on both sides of the Atlantic.

Saxophone player Frank Mauceri is a musical educator, improviser, composer and teacher. He is currently senior lecturer in music at Bowdoin College. His compositions include chamber music, electro-acoustic music, multi-media works, and jazz arrangements. He and bass player Sam Sherry compose many of the tunes performed by ‘Tom Porter and Friends.’

Sam Sherry has been performing on bass since 1974! (But he did start when he was very young). A native of Connecticut, Sam has played concerts on both coasts and in eight countries. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, he has played with many jazz notables, including Jimmy Heath, Eric Marienthal, Jerry Bergonzi and Curtis Fuller.

Michael Boucher was born and raised in eastern Maine and previously lived in Portland, Boston and Seattle and before settling in Freeport in 1989. He has played drums, as an avocation, in various jazz and R&B ensembles since high school. For the past ten years Michael has been playing in the Portland area as the drummer for the Mainestream Jazzmasters, a seven piece jazz combo, and also with The Sidemen, a classic piano trio featuring Ken Gaspar and Herb Maine.
